Airasia ride will be launching in Indonesia in the next two months and is still pending its operational licence in Singapore, said Lim Chiew Shan, regional CEO of airasia ride, during a press conference announcing a full-time employment programme for its drivers. Airasia ride expanded into Thailand in May and is currently offering taxi rides. According to Lim, this same model will apply in both countries.
"There's already a standard model in every country that we plan to go to. We have to tweak it and follow the market needs and regulations in place," he said, adding that airasia ride plans to offer both taxi bookings and private hire cars. Other markets airasia ride is eye include Kuching, Bali, and the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A, said during the event that airasia ride is not looking at conventional models when it comes to its expansion but instead believes in partnerships. "It's not about trying to build everything ourselves. In certain areas where we have friends, we might collaborate. What we offer other ride-hailing companies or food delivery companies is an amazing database and access to airports as well," Fernandes added.
He explained that the company is very good at innovating and creating new ways of "attacking the market by being different". "It isn't just about us opening everywhere. There might be places where we collaborate to build a model in ASEAN," he added.
Effective 1 October 2022, qualified drivers in existing programmes, as well as new drivers, will be able to opt for the full-time drivers programme which will enable them to have a monthly base income of up to RM3,500 including fuel benefits, and the opportunity to earn a total income of up to RM8,000 with additional drivers incentives scheme.
According to airasia ride, it completed two million rides within a year of operation and only four months after achieving one million rides in April this year. It currently has approximately 53,000 registered drivers and is in 11 cities. Despite the competitive ride-hailing scene in Southeast Asia, with Grab and Gojek dominating the market, airasia ride is pushing on.
Just yesterday, the brand expanded into Kota Kinabalu and is giving out 10,000 free rides until 18 September
