AirAsia introduces hijab option in new cabin crew uniform policy

AirAsia has updated its cabin crew uniform policy to allow female crew members to wear the hijab while on duty, marking a significant move for both employee inclusivity and the airline’s brand identity. Cabin crew uniforms have long served as one of the most recognisable symbols of an airline’s image, shaping how travellers perceive the brand the moment they step onboard.

Against that backdrop, AirAsia said the update reflects the airline’s growth as a global carrier with a diverse workforce that mirrors the communities and cultures it connects every day. The updated policy now allows any female cabin crew member across its network to wear the hijab if they choose to, expanding flexibility previously limited to routes such as Jeddah where modest attire is required. The airline said the evolution is aimed at supporting comfort, confidence, and self-expression while preserving its signature professional look.

Bo Lingam, group CEO of the aviation group, said the move reflects AirAsia’s evolution into a global airline shaped by a workforce that mirrors the cultures it connects. He added that the uniform has long stood for professionalism, safety, and comfort, and the new option builds on that foundation by empowering crew to represent the airline in ways aligned with their personal beliefs.

The airline’s group head of cabin crew said the decision celebrates the diversity of the Allstars and reinforces their shared commitment to delivering world-class service. She noted that the team will continue gathering feedback ahead of a detailed rollout, which is expected to begin during Ramadan in 2026.

The hijab and pants option will follow the modest uniform currently worn on routes to destinations such as Jeddah to ensure consistency, comfort, and safety across the network. AirAsia confirmed that its iconic red uniform remains unchanged, with the expanded variant designed to integrate seamlessly into the existing identity.

The update also reflects the company’s willingness to listen to and act on employee input, the brand shared in a release. Capital A’s group CEO said the decision came directly from cabin crew discussions, and that respecting diverse views has been central to the airline’s growth and culture.

The policy update follows a broader refresh of the airline’s uniform programme showcased earlier this year at Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2025, where AirAsia unveiled enhanced cabin crew uniforms made with recycled materials and improved ergonomic design. The updated ensemble, incorporating up to 40 per cent recycled textile content, was created to provide a softer feel, greater flexibility, and better comfort for long working hours.

AirAsia X also debuted a modest uniform variant at KLFW for routes such as Jeddah and Medina. The collection featured a redesigned handbag crafted by a Malaysian designer, adding a layer of local creativity to the overall look.

The airline’s appearance at KLFW marked its tenth anniversary as a partner of the event, highlighting its commitment to Asean creativity and sustainable innovation. The runway opened with a performance by Malaysian pop group DOLLA and featured a showcase celebrating the diversity and regional representation of AirAsia cabin crew.
