A.S. Watson: More people looking for credible sources about health

With health becoming a major concern for millions of people worldwide, they are now looking for reliable sources for health information and seeking help from professionals. A survey conducted by A.S. Watson Group revealed that people are resorting to credible sources when they fall sick.

Conducted between November and December 2019, the Global Health Survey, involving more than 5,500 consumers across 10 markets, showed there had been a reduced number of people searching and relying on online health information, with only 29% of respondents saying they went online to look for information about symptoms.

In the same survey conducted in 2017, the figure was 35%.

A.S. Watson Group said because of the plethora of fake news and false information on the internet and social media, consumers were now seeking health information from credible sources. In the latest survey, 61% of respondents said they commonly saw a doctor when feeling unwell, while 43% bought over-the-counter drugs. However, only 15% of respondents turned to pharmacists for advice.

The survey also included a World Health Index, which was a ranking of the healthiest and least healthiest markets across the globe. The Netherlands topped the list of the healthiest followed by Singapore, the UK, the Philippines, Malaysia, Mainland China, Ukraine, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Thailand came in last place.

Asked how they planned to stay healthy, more than 80% of respondents said enough sleep, a healthy diet, and regular exercise could keep them healthy, but 40% of them have failed to follow this plan. Also, 60% were interested in taking vitamins and dietary supplements to improve their health.

According to A.S. Watson Group, one billion shoppers bought health products last year in its network, while sales for health-related products increased by 11% year-on-year. Health-conscious shoppers visited A.S. Watson’s stores more than 10 times per year and their spending was almost 80% higher than general shoppers.

Malina Ngai, group COO of A.S. Watson Group, and CEO of A.S. Watson (Asia and Europe), said: “Based on our customer insights, health customers spend almost 80% more than an average shopper. Vitamins and supplements have experienced the fastest growth of 12%.”

She added: “We care about our customers’ health, with the aim to ensure we stay abreast of their needs for their lifestyles. We will look for product and service solutions worldwide for our customers who increasingly want more control of their health.”
