7-Eleven and New Balance press play on nostalgia

Following the recent 7-Eleven × New Balance mini sneaker puzzle series, the two brands are taking the collaboration further with a second drop for 7-Eleven's 45th anniversary.

Under the theme "Rewind to FUN", 7-Eleven and New Balance have returned with two new collectibles: the retro cassette player and mini camera. Each weaves together the signature design elements of 7-Eleven and New Balance, turning retro classics into modern lifestyle pieces. The full retro tech series launches on 3 June at 7-Eleven stores, in limited quantities.

Like 7-Eleven, the cassette player has been part of Hong Kong life since the 80s. In an age of endless digital streaming where skipping tracks is second nature, 7-Eleven and New Balance invite Hongkongers to rewind – back to a time before algorithms, when they would sit with a song and let it play out.

The retro cassette player comes in four designs and is available as blind boxes. Each unit comes pre-loaded with a cassette featuring an exclusive cover o "Rare to gather as a family" (難得全家聚一起) arranged by Hong Kong band Rover, plus a pair of wired earphones, ready to play straight out of the box. The casing blends 7-Eleven and New Balance design elements across four distinct colourways, from classic and understated to bold and playful. Each blind box also includes a set of exclusive stickers unique to that colourway – with A/B side labels to help users tell their tapes apart, plus room to personalise their player your own way.

The retro cassette player also works as a thoughtful gift. In recording mode, it can capture a voice message for someone close, delivered in person via the tape itself - a tangible, lasting object that resists digital replication. An FM radio function is also included: sliding the tuning dial allows the listener to find a station and relive the experience of catching a live broadcast, just as in the 1980s.

Meanwhile, the mini camera moves in the opposite direction. It embraces the character of older technology and the appeal of imperfection - capturing life's unplanned moments before a phone can be reached. The mini camera comes in four designs and is sold as a blind box. Each has its own shell colour and pattern – from classic grey-orange to eye-catching pink and understated army green. Small enough to go anywhere, each blind box includes a silver clasp or chain so users can clip it to their keys, hang it from their bag or wear it as a necklace.

The mini camera shoots photos, records video and captures audio – three functions in one compact device. Additional features include adjustable pixel settings, 25 built-in filters usable across both photo and video modes, and motion detection in video mode: the camera starts recording automatically when movement is detected and stops after 10 seconds of stillness to save storage.

Completing the lineup is a foldable sports bag – lightweight, versatile and equally at home at the gym, on a shopping run or on the road. Designed for urban life, the foldable sports bag is made from lightweight polyester with a surprisingly generous capacity. When not in use, it folds neatly into a bow – compact enough to slip into users' pocket.
