Warner Bros. Discovery beefs up Western Pacific leadership with new hires

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has named Gillian Zhao (pictured left) as president for China and Tony Qiu (pictured right) as senior vice president, head of commercial for Western Pacific. Both appointments are effective immediately, Zhao and Qiu report will be reporting to James Gibbons, president and managing director of WBD for Western Pacific.

Zhao will lead the strategic growth of WBD’s theatrical, TV distribution, home entertainment and local theatrical production businesses in China. With over 20 years’ experience across entertainment and high-tech sectors, she is a veteran with strong influence in the Chinese industry, where she has overseen consistently strong box office performance in China, including successfully growing the role and contribution of co-productions.

Meanwhile, Qiu’s appointment is a newly created regional role, where he will be responsible for ad sales and games management in China. Additionally, he will lead the consumer products business in China and ANZ, as well as drive the international ad sales function for the region as a whole. Qiu brings a proven track record of commercial growth to this newly created regional role, with oversight of key lines of revenue for Western Pacific.

Prior to the position, Qiu was SVP, general manager of East and Southeast Asia and DTC business lead for APAC at Discovery Inc, where he was responsible for business profit and loss of Discovery East and Southeast Asian region, including strategy, advertisement sales, distribution, content or production, digital initiatives, marketing, according to his LinkedIn.

Commenting on the two appointments, James Gibbons said: “The combination of assets in Western Pacific markets creates significant creative and commercial opportunities across our diverse WBD portfolio. Zhao and Qiu bring exceptional local and international experience to these roles; their leadership will be key as we look to further monetise and scale our businesses.”

The Western Pacific region comprises Japan, Australia & New Zealand and China, and spans WBD’s portfolio, including Pay-TV, free-to-air (FTA), theatrical, studios, direct-to-consumer (DTC) and consumer products. 

Back in June this year, Warner Bros. Discovery reshuffled its marketing leadership in Asia that the company handed Jason Monteiro the additional remit of head of integrated marketing for India, Southeast Asia, and Korea; and HBO Max's VP, marketing for Southeast Asia Daniel Tan the remit of marketing lead for streaming in Asia Pacific.Monteiro, who joined the company in January this year as GM of HBO Max Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan report to Clement Schwebig, president and MD, India, Southeast Asia and Korea. This was in addition to his role as regional coordinator for streaming in the APAC region.
