Veteran brand strategist Gino Borromeo steps down from Ayala communications post

Gino Borromeo (pictured), head of strategic communications at Ayala Corporation, is stepping down from his role after two years with the group, following a broader organisational redesign.

In a LinkedIn post, Borromeo revealed that his role had been made redundant as part of the restructuring. The seasoned marketing and branding executive had been appointed to lead Ayala’s communications group in March 2024, overseeing corporate messaging and reputation management.

Borromeo reflected on the emotional weight of the decision, noting that he had previously been on the other side of redundancy exercises earlier in his career. “I vividly remember how difficult and emotionally draining it was. I also remember walking out of the room hoping to never experience it as the receiver. So much for that hope,” he wrote.

He added that the past two years had been both rewarding and challenging while helping shape communications for one of the country’s most established business groups.

“It was a genuine privilege to be part of shaping the narrative of a storied business house at a very interesting time in its history, while learning from and being challenged by all kinds of extremely talented and bright people. For this, I will always be grateful,” Borromeo said.

“It was also painful at times. That comes, I suppose, with a role in an organisation that’s evolving in real-time, respecting its past while figuring out the future.”

Looking ahead, Borromeo said he intends to treat this moment as an opportunity to reset his career.

Before joining Ayala, Borromeo served as chief strategy officer at BBDO Guerrero and earlier as vice president of corporate strategy at SM Supermalls. His career also includes senior strategy and planning roles within global advertising networks such as McCann Worldgroup and J. Walter Thompson.

His departure follows other recent leadership changes within the Ayala group. Several senior executives at Ayala Land – including former chief financial officer and long-time treasurer Augusto Bengzon – stepped down from their roles. Vice presidents Jennylle Tupaz, Carol Mills, Ferdie Mangali and Jose Platero also retired.

Ayala Corporation formally adopted its current name in 1968 and was listed on the Manila and Makati stock exchanges in 1976. Today, the group operates across several major sectors that shape the Philippine economy, including real estate, banking, telecommunications and renewable energy.

Its key businesses include property developer Ayala Land, financial institution Bank of the Philippine Islands, telecom operator Globe Telecom, and renewable energy platform ACEN, which is positioning itself as one of Southeast Asia’s largest listed renewables players.
