Toys "R" Us hands Japanese business to Pan Pacific International

Toys "R" Us Asia has agreed to transfer its Japanese operations to an affiliate of Pan Pacific International Holdings Corporation (PPIH). Upon completion of the transaction, which is being executed in connection with civil rehabilitation proceedings in Japan, the local retail network will operate under the PPIH umbrella.
For customers in Japan, operations will proceed as usual through the closing of the deal. Stores will stay open, customer service channels will remain fully operational, and standards for product quality, value, and service will be maintained.
Supporting Japanese staff through an orderly transition, complete with clear communication and guidance, remains a top priority for both organisations.
The deal allows Toys "R" Us Asia to sharpen its focus on long-term growth across its broader regional footprint. All operations outside Japan—including stores, eCommerce platforms, supply chain networks, and vendor partnerships—remain entirely unaffected and will continue normal operations.
Toys "R" Us Asia retains the exclusive right to operate the brand across all other Asian markets.
Adam Au and Johnny Mui, acting co-chief executive officers of Toys "R" Us Asia, said, "Japan has been an important part of the Toys "R" Us family in Asia for many years, and we are deeply grateful to our customers, business partners and team members for their unwavering support throughout that journey."
"While this transaction marks a new chapter for the business in Japan, it also enables Toys "R" Us Asia to sharpen its focus on the significant opportunities ahead across the region. Asia remains at the heart of our business, and we remain firmly committed to our mission of creating toyful experiences and bringing joy to children, families and kidults across the rest of Asia," they added.
In this rapidly shifting digital landscape, Toys "R" Us is rethinking not just how long children spend online, but how they can rediscover the joy of growing, learning and connecting through real‑world, physical play. As screens retreat from the centre of childhood, toys you can touch, build and share are moving back into focus as part of healthy development.
Over the past three years, Toys "R" Us Asia has quietly refreshed its brand around the idea of "Live toyful", a simple ambition to weave plays back into everyday life, rather than treat it as an occasional reward. The shift reflects what many families are already feeling: that in an always‑online world, tangible, offline moments are starting to matter more, not less.
