Stan Sport will become the new home of the English Premier League and Emirates FA Cup from the 2025/26 season, after Nine executed a landmark agreement with Optus and the Premier League to secure exclusive Australian broadcast rights.

The deal marks a major shift in the sports streaming landscape, with all matches to be shown live and on-demand via Stan Sport. Following the transition of rights on 1 August, Optus Sport will shut down entirely.

Stan will pay Optus an upfront $20 million, along with “a significant contribution” towards the first instalment of the next Premier League rights cycle. Coverage begins 3 July with the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, ahead of the Premier League season kick-off on 16 August.

As part of the agreement, Nine also picks up rights to Japan’s J.League and the US National Women’s Soccer League, expanding Stan’s international football portfolio.

“This marks a step change in Nine’s digital growth strategy,” said Nine CEO Matt Stanton. “The Premier League is the most-watched football league on the planet... we are proud to deliver these iconic competitions to Australian audiences through Stan Sport.”

Stanton said the full Nine ecosystem, across TV, digital and publishing, would be activated to grow audiences and drive commercial outcomes. “We have an unrivalled ability to generate excitement at scale,” he said.

The deal ends Optus Sport’s long-running hold on Premier League rights. Optus CEO Stephen Rue said the telco had worked closely with Nine to ensure a smooth transition for subscribers.

“Optus Sport customers and the game of football will be in great hands at Stan,” Rue said.

Amanda Laing, Nine’s managing director of streaming and broadcast, said the acquisition added “firepower” to an already stacked sports line-up that includes the UEFA Champions League, Wimbledon, British & Irish Lions Tour and the Winter Olympics.

“It’s a line-up built for the next era of sport,” she said. “And now elevating the viewing experience with Premier League available in 4K for the first time in Australia.”

The 2025/26 Premier League season kicks off 16 August, with Liverpool and Crystal Palace meeting in the FA Community Shield a week earlier, live on Stan Sport.
