SM Job Fairs turn malls into hiring hubs as 1,000 Filipinos land roles on Labour Day

SM Supermalls has reinforced the role of physical retail spaces as community platforms for employment, mounting nationwide job fairs in partnership with the department of labour and employment (DOLE) as part of the country’s Labour Day observance.
Across 15 mall venues, the initiative brought together 650 employers and 17,400 jobseekers, resulting in more than 1,000 Filipinos hired on the spot. The scale reflects how mall ecosystems – traditionally built for commerce – are increasingly being repositioned as accessible, high-conversion community touchpoints.
The effort sits within DOLE’s broader push, which saw 94 job fairs staged nationwide offering over 278,000 roles. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also made an appearance at a job fair in General Santos City, underlining the programme’s national significance.

The model highlights a shift from footfall to functional engagement. By collapsing the hiring journey – from application and interview to onboarding requirements – into a single, physical environment, SM’s job fairs demonstrate how experiential formats can drive measurable outcomes beyond brand visibility.
On the ground, hiring booths doubled as decision points, with interviews frequently leading to immediate offers. The format reduces friction for both employers and applicants, turning high-traffic retail spaces into efficient recruitment funnels.

Beyond job matching, both SM and DOLE are leaning into capability-building as labour market demands evolve.
DOLE spokesperson Lennard Serrano emphasised the importance of upskilling in improving employability. “They are more equipped, and later on, when they start looking for jobs, their skill set will truly have an added advantage,” Serrano said, as quoted by ABS-CBN.
SM is mirroring that approach through integrated training initiatives, expanding the scope of its job fairs from access to preparedness, including digital and AI learning sessions in partnership with institutions such as the department of information and communications technology.
This dual-track approach – pairing job access with skills development – signals a broader repositioning of retail-led activations as long-term ecosystem plays rather than one-off events.

According to DOLE, the strongest hiring demand came from manufacturing, wholesale and retail, business process outsourcing, construction, and accommodation and food services. Overseas roles were also prominent, particularly for nurses and cleaners, reflecting continued global demand for Filipino talent.
For SM, the job fairs reinforce its positioning not just as a retail landlord, but as a platform connecting government, employers, and communities. As Labour Day activations go, the initiative shows how brand ecosystems can extend into employment, skills, and economic participation – turning everyday locations into catalysts for “stronger futures”.
