Sanrio is introducing a limited "Hello Kitty dress up series" as the character designer Yuko Yamaguchi, who has accompanied fans around the world for many years, will make her final visit to Hong Kong before she hands the creative reins to a new generation of artists.
During her visit, she will attend autograph sessions at the Sanrio Gift Gate Central Flagship Store Sanrioworld+ Hong Kong and the Animation-Comic-Game Hong Kong (ACGHK), as well as a tea gathering with Hello Kitty fans from Hong Kong and Macau. The visit marks an important moment as the Hello Kitty design team prepares to pass the baton to a new generation at Sanrio.
For those who have grown up alongside Hello Kitty, this is not only a rare opportunity to meet the designer, but also a precious moment to share memories with Yamaguchi and witness the beginning of Hello Kitty’s next chapter.
Born in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture, Japan, Yamaguchi has served as Hello Kitty designer for 46 years, continuously introducing fresh elements to the character and helping Hello Kitty become a timeless icon loved around the world across generations and cultures. In addition to Hello Kitty, she also created Hello Kitty’s boyfriend Dear Daniel and pet character Charmmy Kitty, both of whom are adored by fans worldwide.
Over the years, Yamaguchi has actively collaborated with designers and artists, continuously expanding the creative possibilities of Hello Kitty and bringing the character into the worlds of fashion, art and pop culture in many different forms, creating countless joyful memories for fans across generations. Her love for Hello Kitty and creative spirit have not only shaped the character’s classic image but have also become an important shared memory for countless fans as they grew up.
For many years, Yamaguchi has communicated with fans through design and personally visited Sanrio stores around the world to hold autograph sessions, creating hand-drawn Hello Kitty illustrations and autographs for fans. To date, she has held more than 1,000 events and built deep connections with countless fans.
Inspired by Yamaguchi’s personal style, the new "Hello Kitty dress up series" presents the creativity, self-expression and positive energy represented by Hello Kitty, inviting fans around the world to celebrate the friendships and joyful moments that Hello Kitty has brought across generations. This initiative is developed in partnership with The Bridge Agency.
Thoughtfully created by the design team, this limited series brings fans a refreshing surprise and carries special commemorative meaning. Through Hello Kitty, it celebrates precious friendships and countless happy moments around the world, while also serving as a meaningful keepsake of Yamaguchi’s design journey.
Yamaguchi once shared that one of her favourite phrases comes from Charlie Chaplin: “Next One.” Rather than simply looking back on past works, she believes it is more important to continue bringing everyone the next surprise. This passion for creativity will continue through Hello Kitty’s story, accompanying fans as they look forward to more wonderful possibilities and opening a brand-new chapter for the next generation of Hello Kitty.
Although Yamaguchi will soon pass the baton to a new generation of designers at Sanrio, the creativity, warmth and joy she has brought to Hello Kitty over the past 46 years will continue to accompany generations of fans.
