Nine has locked the Premier League into Stan Sport until 2034, making a major long-term bet on football little more than a year after acquiring the Australian rights from Optus.

The broadcaster has signed a six-year extension with the Premier League covering the 2028/29 to 2033/34 seasons, retaining exclusive Australian streaming and broadcast rights to all 380 matches each season.

The agreement is significant not only for its length but for how quickly the Premier League has become an important part of Nine's streaming strategy.

Nine acquired the existing rights from Optus Sport in June last year as part of a broader transaction that brought the Premier League and FA Cup to Stan Sport from the 2025/26 season. That agreement ran until the end of 2027/28, meaning Nine has moved with two seasons still remaining to secure the competition for another six years.

Nine chief executive Matt Stanton said bringing the Premier League to Stan had been a “genuine game-changer” for the business.

“Football is the ultimate global game, followed with remarkable intensity by millions of fans across Australia,” Stanton said.

“As the sole rights holder in Australia, Nine is uniquely placed to activate our assets across streaming and broadcast, publishing and outdoor to promote awareness of Premier League, deepen fan engagement, and tell the game's stories across the entirety of the season.”

The early numbers help explain Nine's willingness to commit.

Stan Sport subscribers increased 40% year-on-year during the first half of FY26, with Nine attributing the growth primarily to the arrival of the Premier League. Stan revenue increased 15% to $282.7 million for the half, while EBITDA climbed 24% to a record $36.6 million.

Nine managing director of streaming and broadcast Amanda Laing said the Premier League had become one of the biggest subscription drivers in Stan Sport's history and contributed to its FY26 financial performance.

“The six-year extension cements Nine as the undisputed home of football in Australia, and reinforces Nine’s commitment to delivering the world’s best sport, news and entertainment across the country’s most comprehensive media network,” Laing said.

The deal also gives Nine considerable certainty over one of the key properties in Australia's increasingly competitive sports-rights market.

Nine's sports portfolio already includes the NRL and NRLW, State of Origin, Olympic Games, Australian Open, rugby union, NBL and WNBL, Super Netball and the 2027 Men's Rugby World Cup.
