McDonald’s Malaysia is bottling Sos Cili Mekdi for the first time, and is inviting Malaysians to trade in their stash of sachets for a free bottle.

The brand will reveal the bottle at an event on 21 October at 8pm at Lot 10 in Bukit Bintang. Attendees can bring an existing chilli sauce packet to exchange for a complimentary bottle, limited to one bottle per person and subject to availability.

There will be 500 bottles in total for grabs. Redemption is limited to one McDonald’s chili sauce package, one bottle per person. According to McDonald’s post, one bottle comprises 44 packets’ worth of sauce.

The post from McDonald's Malaysia has gotten over 6,000 likes overnight.

The event was first teased on 19 October, with a photo of Sos Cili being squeezed into a bottle, with the text "Akan datang" ('Coming soon').

A+M has reached out for more.

The move follows McDonald’s Malaysia’s continued efforts to turn familiar menu favourites into engaging brand experiences.

In July 2026, the brand marked International French Fry Day with its “Fries from the skies” activation in Bukit Bintang, dropping hundreds of French fry-themed plushies attached to redemption cards for complimentary meals. The activation celebrated the ways Malaysians enjoy McDonald’s fries, including dipping them in Sos Cili Mekdi.

The brand has also used large-scale digital out-of-home (DOOH) displays to bring its campaigns to life in the same area. In July 2025, McDonald’s Malaysia illuminated Bukit Bintang’s digital billboards in a synchronised display celebrating its fries, building on its history of turning the district into a stage for brand activations. Years prior, it had also introduced its iconic fries crosswalk there.

The move also reflects how food and beverage brands are increasingly extending their products beyond the point of purchase to build stronger brand recall. A familiar condiment is something fans can keep and use beyond the restaurant, serving as a form of everyday marketing.

This echoes the thinking behind merchandise strategies discussed by ZUS Coffee group CEO Venon Tian, who said branded tumblers and water bottles can strengthen brand recall and encourage customers to return to its outlets.
