HK star Stephen Chow joins hands with Douyin to launch mini-dramas

Hong Kong actor-director Stephen Chow, also known as the "King of Comedy" has inked deal with Douyin to launch a series of mini-dramas for Chinese audiences. 

Chow uploaded a video teaser on his Instagram featuring a whiteboard with the phrase 9527 Theatre (九五二七劇場). In the background, there is a voiceover from one of Chow's classic films, “Flirting Scholar” (唐伯虎點秋香)  which states the iconic line: From today onwards, 9527 will be your lifelong code (今天開始 九五二七就是你的終生代號).

According to multiple reports such as Sina Finance and Variety, the exclusive collaboration aimed to unveil a mini-drama theatre called 九五二七劇場, focusing on producing short dramas. The first episode of the drama series, “金豬玉葉”,  is expected to roll out on Douyin in May this year.

Produced by Chow, the first episode “金豬玉葉” will feature an A-list female star and aims to make the audience laugh and face life with a more uplifted spirit, according to the reports. Moreover, Chow, as the initiator, will join forces with young creators to directly engage with users through his official Douyin account. They will also collaborate on content creation.

According to the reports, Chow said that while short dramas have rapidly developed due to technological and media innovations in recent years, the collaboration aims to create a short drama theatre and bring more joy to the audience.

Back in August last year, Chow teased his new collaboration with cryptocurrency platform OKX on Web3 on his Instagram following his call to recruit Web3 talents.

According to Chow's Instagram post, he was seen conducting a Zoom meeting with cryptocurrency firm OKX. Chow said: “Grateful to gather a team of like-minded Web3 buddies. They are currently working on a Web3 plus AI project. Hopefully there will be my own AI to replace me in meetings soon."
