Fans of the Hong Kong men’s football team have queued up to get the latest version of the "Hong Kong jersey" before the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) includes “China” to its official name.
This came as the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China’s (SF&OC) told Hong Kong’s national sports associations to include "China" to their official organisation names by 1 July. They may risk losing their funding and the right to take part in major competitions if they did not follow the rule.
The 2023/24 Hong Kong Football Team jersey continues to use the traditional red and white colour as the main theme, with white borders on the sleeves for embellishment. The pattern design details are combined with moisture-wicking and quick-drying materials, and are made of 100% recycled polyester fiber, allowing players to exert their full strength during the game, according to HKFA's official website.
However, Pui Kwan Kay, chairperson of the HKFA said in an annual meeting that, the Hong Kong football team’s jersey will be out of print at the end of March. The HKFA revealed the football team’s latest kit design on its official website on 17 March, which is likely the last before adding “China” to its name.
Held at Mong Kok Stadium on last Friday (24 March), Hong Kong played against Singapore in the International Football Friendly Match. According to a report by HKFP, supporters gathered outside the stadium hours before the match hoping to get the Hong Kong jersey before it gets out of print. Some fans said that the latest jersey looked a bit plain but it might be the last batch with HKFA’s current name.
