Harian Kompas and dentsu launch AI-powered tool for sexual assault survivors
share on
A new AI-driven initiative led by Harian Kompas and dentsu Indonesia is changing the way sexual assault survivors in Indonesia are supported, offering both a voice and a path to legal protection through a tool called MANTRA of Hope.
Launched as a response to the alarming fact that nine out of ten sexual assault cases in Indonesia remain unresolved due to a lack of evidence of non-consent, the project offers survivors a discreet and legally sound method of gathering proof. This insight was uncovered through extensive research into Harian Kompas' journalistic archives, alongside consultations with criminal law experts, according to a release by dentsu.
The MANTRA of Hope app allows survivors to activate an audio recording feature using a personalised phrase—a "mantra"—of their own choosing. Once triggered, the device begins discreetly capturing audio in the background, storing it alongside critical metadata including time, date, and location. This information is kept secure and unedited, enabling survivors to present credible and admissible evidence should they choose to report the assault.

To ensure the tool reached those who need it most, the campaign was rolled out via podcasts, social media, and digital news outlets, enlisting support from legal professionals, activists, and survivors. The initiative has since sparked conversation and empowered people with knowledge of their rights and the mechanism for justice.
"As one of Indonesia's largest media groups, Kompas carries a profound responsibility to advocate for and support survivors of sexual violence," said Tarrence Palar, marketing communication and community manager at Harian Kompas. "This collaboration with dentsu Indonesia is a testament to our commitment to making a lasting impact. By combining innovative AI technology with our platform's reach and dentsu's seamless execution, we hope this initiative will inspire continued efforts to protect victims' rights and create a safer society for all."
Defri Dwipaputra, executive creative director at dentsu Creative Indonesia, added, "What comes from the heart reaches the heart. This campaign was born from our dentsu Indonesia team's deep concern for the countless unresolved sexual harassment cases in Indonesia. With MANTRA of Hope, our goal is not only to empower survivors with a tool for justice but also to create real change by reducing these cases altogether."
The campaign has achieved success, generating over IDR 31 billion (US$1.8 million) in earned media value, garnering more than 42 million impressions, and surpassing 1,000 app downloads.
Through innovation, advocacy, and collective will, Harian Kompas and dentsu Indonesia are setting a precedent: one where survivors no longer face silence alone, but are armed with a voice—and a record—that can lead to justice.
