GoPay brings Indonesian QRIS payments to Japan, eyes China next
share on
GoPay, GoTo Group’s digital payment platform, has extended its cross-border capabilities to Japan, allowing Indonesian travellers to make payments at QRIS-enabled merchants simply by scanning a JPQR code via the GoPay app.
This follows Bank Indonesia’s official expansion of the QRIS cross-border service to Japan from August 2025, after successful implementations in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.
In addition, Bank Indonesia has initiated a pilot programme to connect QRIS with China’s digital payment systems, aiming for full implementation by the end of 2025. This will enable Indonesians to use GoPay at QRIS-enabled merchants across China in the near future.

The central bank reported that cross-border QRIS transactions reached a total value of IDR 1.66 trillion (US$101 million) as of June 2025, highlighting strong consumer adoption of the system.
Meanwhile, cross-border payments through the GoPay app have grown rapidly in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, said Sudhanshu Raheja, president director of GoTo Financial. “As Indonesia’s leading digital financial services ecosystem, GoPay continues to support Bank Indonesia’s initiative to expand QRIS cross-border access, with China set to be included soon. We are committed to providing our users with convenience, security, and affordability in every transaction, both domestically and internationally,” he added.
The service offers users transparent exchange rates, eliminates the hassle of currency conversion, and keeps transaction costs low. Beyond consumer convenience, the expansion also benefits Indonesian tourism SMEs and merchants by enabling them to accept payments from international visitors.
“With the ongoing expansion of cross-border cooperation, QRIS cross-border marks a key milestone in advancing financial inclusion, strengthening Indonesia’s digital economy, and delivering greater convenience for Indonesians engaging in activities abroad,” said Raheja.
GoTo Financial was launched in 2016 to promote financial inclusion and help individuals and businesses manage their finances securely and efficiently. Its GoPay digital payment solution forms part of a broader ecosystem offering services for payments, transfers, savings, loans, protection, and investments through consumer and merchant apps.
As part of the GoTo ecosystem, GoTo Financial also provides enterprise solutions such as payment gateways and digital identity services, supporting businesses in a digital-first economy.
