With great power, comes great responsibility - and influencers have plenty of it.

Around 70% of Singaporean survey participants, and 82% of participants in Southeast Asia, have admitted to being influenced by recommendations from influencers or celebrities in their purchasing decisions.

According to influencer and affiliate partnership management platform impact.com, the reasons users follow influencers vary, including entertainment (73%), lifestyle inspiration (52%), and a desire to learn from influencers (51%).

However, there have also been instances of influencers taking things too far. Earlier this year, we saw some of these content creators fake their own deaths, kidnappings and physical attacks in an attempt to get views.

While these are extreme examples, in an increasingly cluttered digital space, influencers do need to sometimes do drastic things to get eyeballs. In this series MARKETING-INTERACTIVE takes a look at some of the craziest things our local influencers have done to create content and to get views.

What is the craziest thing you have done for views and content?

The craziest thing I've done is jumping into an MRT carriage filled with people. I launched myself into the crowd.

For the perfect audience reaction, I did it more than 50 times in a row just for one scene in a video. The public was stunned, bewildered and some of them perhaps thought I was crazy. Public stunts like these are rare.

What is the craziest thing you would do for views and content?

This question hasn't really crossed my mind before - but I would do absolutely anything - whether it's fighting with a kangaroo or jumping into a sea of sharks. As long as I'm alive at the end of the day, I am willing to do it.

What is the craziest thing you have done for views and content?

The craziest thing I’ve done for content is sharing my experience being detained at Singapore customs.

It was because of one of my pro-Palestine posts. I wanted to educate Singaporeans about our rights. Most people would have been afraid to speak up after being intimidated by the state like that. However, I felt more empowered after the incident and wanted to share more with my fellow Singaporeans. It’s important to not be afraid if you’re on the right side of history.

What is the craziest thing you would do for views and content?

Honestly, the craziest thing I would do for views and content is to share my relationship on social media. Most of the TikTok videos with my partner in it gain a lot of traction and engagement. Unfortunately, my partner is not very keen on this idea unless I really force him or it’s a paid campaign.

For me personally, in this day and age, it’s very important to keep your relationship private. I really do believe in the evil eye. Hence, why sharing my relationship on social media is a “crazy” thing to do.

What is the craziest thing you have done for views and content?

I spent four hours every single day for two months studying the Malaysian audience.

My followers were stagnant at 20k for the whole year in 2023 and at the end of December, I made it a personal goal to reach the audience in Malaysia. Every night after work, I put aside four hours just to study their FYPs, understand the type of content they were consuming and their engagement behaviours.

I started to trial and error on my own content in January this year and within two months, my followers doubled to its current amount which is 43.4k. It definitely taught me that hard work, passion and diligence pays off.

What is the craziest thing you would do for views and content?

The craziest thing I would do is to overcome my acrophobia (the fear of heights) and thalassophobia (the fear of deep bodies of water) on camera. As an introvert, it would take a lot for me to showcase this much raw emotion and vulnerability to the world. However, I expect when and if I finally do it, I would be motivated by my passion for content creation and for my followers to celebrate this huge milestone with me.
