Caught in the rain? DANA users can now get an insurance payout
share on
Indonesians can now insure themselves against rain-related disruptions for IDR 500 (2.8 US cents), with DANA and insurtech firm Igloo launching a parametric weather insurance product that automatically pays out when rainfall reaches a set threshold.
Called DANA Rain Protection, the product is embedded into DANA's QRIS payment flow. Users who purchase the policy receive an automatic IDR 50,000 (US$2.78) payout if rainfall at their location reaches 2.5mm or more during the day of purchase.
There is no claims form or manual assessment involved. The product uses satellite precipitation data alongside the user's GPS coordinates to verify whether the rainfall threshold has been met and trigger the payout automatically.

The launch marks the first parametric insurance product in the existing Igloo-DANA portfolio, expanding their partnership from conventional insurance products into weather-triggered protection.
“Parametric insurance has always solved a critical problem for farmers. What DANA Rain Protection shows is that the technology Igloo has built over the years can make something useful but niche, mainstream, directly benefiting the life of a commuter caught in a downpour,” said Raunak Mehta, co-founder and CEO of Igloo.
“DANA’s vast reach and household reputation in Indonesia allows this product to reach millions immediately, enabling protection for Indonesians that meet them where they are.”
Parametric insurance has traditionally been associated with risks such as drought and flooding, particularly in agriculture. Rather than assessing an individual's losses after an incident, parametric products use predefined, measurable conditions to determine when a payout should be made.
For DANA Rain Protection, that trigger is rainfall. The proposition targets everyday disruptions that can follow heavy rain, including delayed commutes, cancelled outdoor activities, higher ride-hailing costs and reduced foot traffic for small merchants.
Igloo said the automated model can also reduce the administrative burden associated with claims because payouts are based on an external data trigger rather than individual loss assessments.
The rain protection product adds to five insurance products already distributed through DANA: Electronics Protection, Phone Screen Protection, Food Poisoning Protection, Movie Ticket Cancellation and Cyber Protection.
The companies said the same infrastructure could potentially be applied beyond consumer insurance, including to businesses whose operations are affected by weather.
Igloo pointed to ride-hailing and delivery platforms facing reduced driver availability and higher surge costs during rainfall, as well as restaurants, retailers, event organisers and travel operators that can experience falling footfall, bookings or activity when weather conditions change.
“Unexpected weather can disrupt mobility, daily activities, and even income, particularly for those who depend on being on the move. Through our collaboration with Igloo, DANA Rain Protection integrates affordable protection into a familiar payment journey. Igloo's parametric claims technology means payouts reach our users automatically when conditions are met, without forms or waiting. That is the kind of embedded, frictionless experience we want DANA to deliver,” said Yattha Saputra, chief finance officer at DANA.
