Cathay celebrates 80 years with flash mobs and exclusive collabs

In celebration of its 80th anniversary, Cathay has hosted a series of flash mobs at Taikoo Place and the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) to show its gratitude to the public and global travellers.

Choreographed in collaboration with the Hong Kong Dance Company and local composer Patrick Lui, the bespoke performance incorporated musical scores and choreography adapted from the grand dance drama Kung Fu Artistry.

The piece brought together 80 uniformed Cathay staff alongside professional dancers to trace the airline's evolution through five distinct movements: honouring its legacy with a opening drum sequence, showcasing brand milestones across different eras, incorporating Hong Kong cultural motifs inspired by Bruce Lee, and concluding with a grand finale celebrating the airline's deep connection to its home city.

The dual venues were selected to reflect key aspects of Cathay's identity - bringing the milestone directly to local communities at Taikoo Place while engaging international passengers at HKIA, Hong Kong's global aviation hub. A teaser video was also uploaded on social media to engage with fans and Hongkongers.

Alongside the live performances, Cathay has unveiled a suite of commemorative 80th-anniversary merchandise bridging aviation heritage, fashion, and design. Headlining the collection is an aircraft model set limited to 1,680 pieces worldwide, featuring eight 1:400 scale aircraft showcasing historic liveries and milestone moments from Cathay’s fleet, presented in a collector's display box with an individually numbered card.

The lineup also includes a Cathay × BE@RBRICK dual-pack set in 100% and 400% sizes that pays homage to the beloved "lettuce leaf sandwich" livery from the 1970s through the 1990s. The figures feature the registration number "VR-HKG" in honour of Cathay’s first Boeing 747, former Kai Tak Airport runway markings printed on the back legs, and a transparent cabin-window chest detailing on the larger edition.

Rounding out the anniversary range are luxury collaborations including a special-edition Breitling Avenger Automatic GMT 44 timepiece and a silk scarf series with Nina Ricci that reinterprets a classic 1990s Cathay design.

To complete the airport activation, Cathay has installed 14 teddy bear figures wearing eight generations of vintage cabin crew uniforms across key areas of HKIA, giving travellers an interactive photo-spot experience with gift redemption opportunities.

As part of the anniversary celebration, Cathay unveiled a short film titled ‘The journey home’ earlier this year, a cinematic tribute inspired by eight decades of shared milestones between the airline and its passengers.

The film depicts a series of relatable memories, following the narrative of a daughter who parts ways with her mother in Hong Kong to chase her dreams and study abroad. This scenario resonates with audiences worldwide, capturing the inevitable highs, lows, and shared reflections that characterise such a life-changing journey.
