Can a superhero and a robot cut through the 9.9 noise?

TikTok Shop Singapore has taken its 9.9 campaign beyond the screen and onto the streets of Orchard Road, as the eCommerce platform looks to blur the lines between online shopping and physical retail experiences.

At the centre of the campaign is 'Promo Bro', TikTok Shop's 9.9 superhero tasked with battling the 'Price monsters', a group of larger-than-life villains representing rising prices. This time, however, he has some robotic backup.

On 29 August, Promo Bro took to Orchard Road alongside 'Lobang Bot', a Unitree humanoid robot serving as his futuristic sidekick. The street activation brought the campaign's characters to life through storytelling, robotics and public participation.

As part of a live "Battle moves" performance, members of the public could select moves for Lobang Bot to perform on the spot, turning the robotic sidekick into an interactive part of the experience.

In conversation with MARKETING-INTERACTIVE, Charissa Beh, brand marketing lead, TikTok Shop Singapore, said the decision to take the campaign offline came as brands increasingly experiment with experiential formats to reach consumers.

"We saw an opportunity to extend the 9.9 campaign beyond the app and give people a chance to experience its characters and story first-hand," Beh said. "Bringing Promo Bro and Lobang Bot into a physical setting allowed us to translate the campaign's playful energy into an engaging real-world experience."

Orchard Road was a natural setting for the activation given its position as one of Singapore's best-known shopping destinations, she added.

While TikTok Shop's shopping experience primarily lives online, Beh said the platform wants to meet consumers where they are and create stronger links between their digital and physical shopping experiences.

The addition of Lobang Bot also taps into growing public fascination with humanoid robots, which Beh noted have increasingly appeared at global sporting events, public demonstrations and viral performances.

"TikTok is shaped by culture and emerging trends, so we wanted the activation to reflect that same spirit of experimentation and give people an opportunity to encounter this technology in an unexpected setting," she explained.

Within the campaign's fictional universe, Promo Bro represents the everyday shopper hunting for a good deal, while Lobang Bot acts as his technologically advanced companion in the fight against high prices.

The pairing was deliberately designed around the contrast between the two characters, giving TikTok Shop another way to make the familiar 9.9 shopping occasion more entertaining and distinctive.

However, getting Singaporeans talking about the sale is only part of the equation. According to Beh, TikTok Shop also wanted the activation to entertain shoppers and spark curiosity among people who may not already be familiar with the platform. She said:

By creating an experience that people could stop, watch, and engage with, we hoped to leave a lasting positive impression and give them a reason to learn more about the campaign and the offers available on TikTok Shop.

The Orchard Road activation also serves as a lead-in to TikTok Shop's "9.9 Night LIVE Fest", which runs from 3 to 9 September. The online leg will feature limited "Super Lobang" product drops, flash vouchers and creator-led LIVE sessions featuring creators including @fredyjays and @thelohbros, alongside free shipping on eligible products during the campaign period.

More broadly, the activation points to how TikTok Shop sees the relationship between physical retail and its discovery-led commerce model. Rather than treating offline and online shopping as separate experiences, Beh said physical activations can provide another consumer touchpoint that ultimately connects back to the platform.

"It also supports the discovery-led experience on TikTok Shop, where content and commerce come together to help shoppers encounter new products and offers," she said. "Extending the campaign offline created another consumer touchpoint while connecting the digital experience with Singapore's wider retail landscape."

The move comes as double-digit sales such as 9.9, 10.10, 11.11 and 12.12 have become fixtures of the regional eCommerce calendar, leaving platforms competing not only on discounts but also for shoppers' attention.

For TikTok Shop, Beh said standing out increasingly means looking beyond promotions and considering how consumers discover and interact with products in the first place.

By bringing content, creators, communities and LIVE into the shopping experience, the platform aims to make commerce more interactive and move consumers from entertainment and product discovery through to purchase.

"We bring that same approach to our campaigns by combining compelling value with creative storytelling and participatory experiences," Beh said.

For this year's 9.9 push, that meant turning the perennial hunt for a bargain into a superhero story, and sending its hero and robot sidekick out into Singapore's biggest shopping belt to fight the Price Monsters in person.
