BMW targets EV drivers as Jolt data points to shorter upgrade window

BMW is using Jolt’s electric vehicle charging network to target EV drivers who may already be closer to their next car purchase than traditional petrol drivers.

The campaign, billed as Australia’s first vehicle-triggered digital out-of-home ad takeover, is built around data showing 47% of surveyed customers are already buying or researching their next vehicle within 12 to 36 months of their first EV purchase.

That purchase window is sharpened by the structure of the EV market itself. Jolt said 38% of surveyed customers acquired their EV through a novated lease, creating a more predictable return-to-market cycle as those leases expire.

The campaign works by using the charging moment as the trigger. When a non-BMW driver plugs into a Jolt charger, the digital screen is taken over for two minutes with BMW creative, while the Jolt app simultaneously serves BMW video and display advertising.

The work was developed with media agency Atomic 212 and creative agency Scooter, and is live across Jolt’s network in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. Powered by Jolt’s Spark Intelligence platform, it also adapts BMW creative in real time based on weather and location, while taking advantage of the network’s average 41-minute dwell time.

BMW Group Australia general manager of marketing and product Alex McLean said the campaign gave the brand a defined window to reach EV drivers with relevant messaging.

“BMW was looking for innovative ways to engage EV drivers, making Jolt a natural strategic partner. The BMW iX3 charges in half the time of many other EVs on the market - and that precision is exactly what makes this campaign so compelling,” McLean said.

“When a Jolt EV driver plugs in, we have a defined, distraction-free window to reach them with messaging that responds dynamically to their environment.

“The triggered delivery, the localised screen takeover, and the weather-responsive creative all tie back to the unique characteristics of the iX3. This is a market first in Australia, and a really exciting way to combine DOOH with digital precision, and we're proud to be part of it.”

Tim Debenham, national sales director at Jolt, said the campaign reflects a shift in how outdoor media can be used to target high-intent audiences. He said it also served a dual purpose for long-term consideration and brand building.

"For the novated lease cohort, it drives near-term consideration as they approach lease turnover and re-enter the market. For the broader EV base, it builds long-term brand equity ahead of a purchase cycle that is historically shorter than traditional petrol equivalents," he said.

“The technology that powers this partnership with BMW has not existed in-market before now. This is behavioural precision in a broadcast format, and no other operator in Australia can match this level of accuracy,” Debenham said.

“BMW can target EV drivers who are in a purchase upgrade window - those people who are already committed to EVs and most likely to upgrade.”

The campaign comes as EV adoption continues to reshape automotive marketing, with brands looking for more precise ways to reach drivers already inside the category.

VFACTS data shows electrified vehicles, including battery, conventional hybrid vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles, accounted for 46 per cent of new vehicle sales during May.

For BMW, the Jolt partnership turns the charging moment into a media moment, using infrastructure, first-party data and contextual creative to reach non-BMW EV drivers while they are plugged in.
