Product engineering company 99x has commenced operations at its new technology centre in Malaysia in support of its global expansion strategy. With this, it intends to collaborate with leading tech universities to build digital product engineering competencies.

The technology centre was also recently recognised with the Malaysia Digital status by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) as a contributor towards the Malaysian digital ecosystem, according to a statement by the brand.

“Global expansion was always a priority in our growth ambitions. The capital investment in 2021 set the platform on which to expand our presence both in Europe and in Asia, resulting in our technology centre in Malaysia,” said Mano Sekaram, founder and CEO of 99x.

“While we evaluated many countries, Malaysia topped the list based on synergies across cultural fit, communication skills, proximity, and access to talent,” he continued.

As 99x grows its presence in Malaysia, the new technology centre also aims to provide opportunities for senior employees to take on global consulting roles and stints.

In support of the centre, MDEC collaborated with 99x from the inception of the Malaysia Digital (MD) application process and aims to bring Malaysia closer to its goal of establishing itself as the digital hub of ASEAN, added Mahadhir Aziz, chief executive officer of MDEC.

He also said, “The Malaysia Digital national strategic initiative aims to transform the nation's digital capabilities, enhancing our value proposition to attract digital investments and boost the digital economy.”

“We are committed to supporting 99x presence here and their growth via various PEMANGKIN initiatives, as we work together to drive digital transformation and foster a culture of innovation that will have a positive impact across the nation,” Mahadhir elaborated.

Similarly, Digital infrastructure company Equinix INC is set to establish its first data centre in Kuala Lumpur in the first quarter of 2024. This follows its announcement last year that it would be entering the Malaysia market with a data centre in Johor.

Malaysia is a fast-growing data centre market in the ASEAN region, with much of its development attributed to Johor and Kuala Lumpur, according to Malaysian trade minister Zafrul Abdul Aziz.

With the country entering the second phase of its MyDIGITAL blueprint for a digital economy, demand for digital infrastructure is projected to remain strong. Equinix’s expansion then is anticipated to contribute to Malaysia’s MyDIGITAL blueprint to establish Malaysia as a centre for colocation in the ASEAN region.
