WhatsApp has launched a new feature, "Status", which introduces a new tab for users to share decorated photos, videos and GIFs to selected friends for 24 hours. The feature is believed to be a clone of Snapchat and Instagram Stories, only that it is end-to-end encrypted like WhatsApp messaging. It will begin rolling out globally in phases, starting with users in Europe across Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone. Other regions will be in line to get the feature later. The new feature represents a big shift for WhatsApp, changing it from a traditional texting app into a content-consuming platform, and in turn, the messaging giant can finally introduce an advertising system.
