Ogilvy & Mather Hong Kong has launched a campaign for the Hong Kong-based brand Rio Mints. The campaign, ‘Surprisingly Fruity’ breaks Hong Kong’s conservative advertising mold with some light-hearted humour and odd puppetry, but for now will not be shown on TV.The first blast, launched through Rio Mints Facebook page, is for Rio Burgundy Grape Mints and features a young man and woman seated on a bench in their beach attire – the man holding a purple lama stuffed toy. The woman offers the man one of her Rio Burgundy Grape Mints, which he happily takes, but is so astounded by the flavour that he fails to notice his toy lama come to life and start licking his nipple. Ogilvy said a series of commercials roll out over time, airing in Hong Kong across TV and online platforms, primarily YouTube.Reed Collins, chief creative officer at Ogilvy & Mather Hong Kong, said the agency wanted to try and do something that not only amuses and entertains viewers, but to get people talking about Rio Mints over it’s competitors. “The Surprisingly Fruity campaign has been a hell of a lot of fun to make and we’re already beginning to see success online. There is plenty of room for and a real hunger by brands and consumers for all styles of marketing in Hong Kong.”
