Hong Kong’s top trending searches of 2017

As 2017 draws to a close, it’s time to look back at the year about to end. Google Hong Kong unveiled the top trending searches in 2017, reflecting the people, games, stories, entertainment, and discussions that mattered to Hongkongers the most this year.

In Hong Kong, this year’s top trending keywords are TV and online dramas, with The Exorcists Meter taking the top spot.

Debuted on the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, the iPhone 8 and iPhone X took second and fourth place on the list respectively.

Hongkongers were also interested in emerging enterprises and new IPOs – hence Tencent-backed Yixin being the 10th top trending keyword in 2017.

Hongkongers often use Google to deduce the meanings of abbreviations and Internet slang. This year, “KOL” made it to the top of the top trending internet slang, followed by “DQ” and “LOL”.

Rex Tso ignited Hongkongers’ passion in sports

Home-grown professional athletes continue to make Hong Kong proud. Hongkongers’ growing passion and support for sports is amply demonstrated through search. Top professional boxer Rex Tso, nicknamed “The Wonder Kid”, topped the list of the Google Hong Kong top trending local people in current affairs and top trending sports news this year.

This follows his record year securing 22 consecutive victories in October, obtaining his crown as the unbeaten WBO Asia Pacific super flyweight champion. Rex Tso match also made it on the top trending local news search of 2017, as well as his opponent Kohei Kono on the top trending international people in current affairs.

Alongside Rex, local full-time high jumper Cecilia Yeung, who set the women’s high jump record in Taiwan this April, and Sarah Lee, one of Hong Kong’s Olympic Games medalists, also made to the list of the top trending sports keywords, amongst a number of international sporting events.

Hongkongers search for mobile banking and AI-related topics

Smarter finance powered by mobile and technology is top-of-mind for Hongkongers. PayMe and Alipay are ranked as 8th and 9th among top trending financial news in 2017 respectively. Top of the list is Tencent-backed Yixin, followed by Singaporean-founded American gaming company Razer, and a second Tencent-backed venture China Literature, all regarded as three of the hottest IPOs in the past year.

In 2017, international tech companies made a number of breakthroughs in the development and application of AI, drawing Hongkongers’ attention to innovation and technology. AlphaGo, the AI program developed by DeepMind that plays Go, shocked the world as it defeated Ke Jie, Chinese professional Go player of 9 dan rank, this May, gaining them both a spot on the list of the top trending technology keywords in 2017.
