Channel NewsAsia opens news hub in Yangon

Broadcaster Channel NewsAsia has opened a news bureau in Myanmar. It is one of four foreign news organisations to be licensed to operate in the country. The other three organisations are Associated Press, Kyodo News and NHK. The Channel NewsAsia bureau is based in Yangon.Managing director, Debra Soon said: “With international investors and tourists alike flocking there to take advantage of the abundant opportunities, we want to be able to capture all these developments right at the source, and to show the historic moments on the channel for the rest of Asia and elsewhere.”There are also plans to bring the channel’s Business Insights seminar series to Yangon early next year. The Business Insights series made a  debut in Jakarta in August 2013, and will also be hosted in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh.In May 2013, Channel NewsAsia screened a 6-part series, “The New Myanmar”, giving insights into the country’s transformation from people who experienced it first hand - business leaders, policy makers, artists, journalists, activists, conservationists and the ordinary people.Correspondent for the market May Wong has already been filing stories from Myanmar since early this year.Recent coverage on Channel NewsAsia includes the channel’s interviews with President Thein Sein, who gave his first international television interview with its Indochina correspondent in July 2012 amongst others. In May 2013, Channel NewsAsia screened a 6-part series, “The New Myanmar”, giving insights into the country’s transformation from people who experienced it first hand - business leaders, policy makers, artists, journalists, activists, conservationists and the ordinary people.Last year Channel NewsAsia also made its foray into Myanmar signing up with Pay TV operator, Sky Net.  Meanwhile, Channel NewsAsia also launched an expansion plan with a new look and programme line up to help viewers better “Understand Asia”.
