CBCP official wants One Direction Manila concert shut down

An official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) wants to bar One Direction from performing in the Philippines, fearing that the popular British boy band may lead Filipino youths in the “wrong direction.”Several reports cited CBCP Episcopal Commission on Youth executive secretary Fr. Conegundo Garganta asking President Benigno Aquino III to ban the stars to continue their scheduled two-day concert in March 2015 following allegations that some of its members were caught smoking marijuana.“I think that even the local organizers do not want to have a culture of youth being stoned. That could become a problem for them,” Garganta said. However, CBCP president Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas clarified that Garganta’s call to ban the group reflect his personal views and not CBCP’s."In the first place that some members smoked marijuana or contraband does not make its group itself condemnable," Villegas said."One Direction has so many young followers. We condemn a group they idolize you condemn them…there has to be a better way of leading them to right path. CBCP loves and reaches out to the youth,” he added.Anti-drug advocacy group Laban ng Pamilyang Pilipino is also against the One Direction from having a concert in the country. Its founder, Jonathan Morales, said that the group can only perform if its members agree to undergo a drug test once they arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International AirportThe One Direction concert in Manila is scheduled on 21 March to 22, next year.
