Japanese retail company and owner of Uniqlo, Fast Retailing, will be expanding its reach with the opening of two stores in Surabaya, East Java.
This move increases the number of Uniqlo stores in Indonesia to 13, with a presence in several regions such as Jakarta, Tangerang in Banten, Bekasi and Bandung in West Java, according to the Jakarta Post. The stores will open in September this year.
According to PT Fast Retailing Indonesia president director Michiaki Tanaka, the two new stores were part of Uniqlo’s plan to expand its reach to customers locally. He added that they were also an opportunity for the company to understand Indonesia’s culture and wisdom, particularly in Surabaya.
Marketing has reached out to Uniqlo for a comment.
Last year, Uniqlo launched its global flagship store for Southeast Asia and Singapore and released a campaign titled “Your Stage Now Live”. In the campaign video, the hoarding around the store’s construction site into an urban canvas designed collectively by the local community. Members of the public were invited to express themselves and showcase their culture to the world through a special “Your Stage Now Live” site.
It also partnered with Discovery Consumer Products, the licensing arm of Discovery Communications, earlier this year to produce a brand-new collection of unisex youth t-shirts embodying Discovery Channel’s spirit of curiosity.
