While the Chinese government has just passed a new rule legalising ride-hailing services, Uber said it will end services in Macau on 9 September if talks with local authorities cannot resolve the issues of legalising the serviceIn a letter to Macau legislator Au Kam San, Uber's general manager of the Asia Pacific region, Mark Brown, and director of public policy, Damian Kassabgi said: "We plan to suspend our services. The government is not yet willing to set a timetable for the legislation to govern car-sharing services [that Uber has been providing]. Meanwhile, it imposed extraordinarily heavy fines to our drivers, making us unable to operate in Macau."According to Uber, local police forces have charged over 10 million patacas in fines from over 300 Uber drivers in the past 10 months. The company entered Macau in October 2015. According to the letter, it currently has over 2,000 full-time and part-time driver partners in the territory."We believe we do not have to make such a decision if the government is showing willingness to regulate the car-hailing operations and to create an operating environment without prohibitive fines," the executives of the company wrote.Meanwhile, political association Macao Community Development Initiative will organise a protest march on 4 September to support the company.
