SPH considers legal action over Straits Times Review's name

Following the recent controversial shutdown of The Real Singapore(TRS), its founder and former editor Alex Tan has set up an “independent news site” named Straits Times Review (STR), much to the ire of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH).The Straits Times stated in an article  that SPH was seeking legal recourse against Tan for the site’s name, which bears close resemblance to its flagship newspaper. However, since the site was registered in Australia by Tan, who had paid a "one-time fee of $120", legally, the matter is out of the Singapore jurisdiction.It appears Tan has sought to settle the matter out of court and changed the name. Marketing has reached out to SPH for a comment.According to its latest Facebook update STR has since changed the site's name to States Times Review.Hi all, I have changed the site name to States Times Review to avoid legal confrontations with The Straits Times.Also,...Posted by States Times Review on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 The Straits Times reported that SPH had also lodged a trademark infringement complaint to Facebook against the Straits Times Review (STR) Facebook page, calling for it to be removed.States Times Review site is currently inaccessible, allegedly due to overwhelming traffic.Last Sunday, TRS, which Tan was an editor for, was ordered by Media Development Authority to shut its site down for publishing "objectional content."
