Omnicom has rehired Peter Sherman as executive vice president to oversee a series of initiatives and collaborations, ahead of its mega merger with French advertising group Publicis.
Sherman rejoins Omnicom after less than a year with JWT, where he served as North America CEO. Sherman joined JWT in June 2013 as CEO of its New York office and was promoted to CEO, North America, in December.
Prior to JWT, Sherman was EVP and managing director of BBDO Europe where he led 35 BBDO offices in 18 countries.
He will report directly to John Wren, president and CEO of Omnicom Group.
In a statement, Wren said Sherman has a proven track record of effectively managing some of BBDO’s largest clients.
“His global experience in multiple categories is perfect for the role of strengthening our relationships with our biggest clients by providing them with better and more integrated services. I am delighted he is returning to Omnicom.”
The news will come as a blow to WPP’s Sir Martin Sorrell, who has said repeatedly that the planned merger of Publicis and Omnicom would result in an exodus of talent.
Sherman said that the direction Wren was taking the company and culture was “too great to resist.”
“It feels great to be back home,” he added.
China is yet to approve the Omnicom’s US$35 billion merger with Publicis months after the deal was approved by antitrust authorities in the US and the European Union.
