Nokia phone maker HMD Global CEO steps down "with immediate effect"

Finnish-based company HMD Global, which is now making Nokia phones, announced that its chief executive Arto Nummela is stepping down with immediate effect. HMD global's president Florian Seiche has been appointed to the additional role of acting CEO.The announcement comes in the midst of introducing an entirely new lineup of Android powered-smartphones throughout the year.In the statement, HMD Global said the departure was a "mutual agreement between Nummel and the company's board of directors". "Arto Nummela has played a key role in the creation of the HMD Global operation, building the team and launching our first products."On behalf of the whole Board, I thank Arto for his contribution and wish him well in his future endeavors," Sam Chin, HMD Global's chairman of the board said.An HMD spokeman told Venturebeat that it was a personal matter between the two, but declined to elaborate.HMD Global acquired the manufacturing and distribution assets of the former Nokia phone business from Microsoft last year.The company briefly "announced" the rumored Nokia 8 on one of its official websites last night (20 July), before quickly taking it down again.Online rumours have it that the new Nokia 8 could be announced as early as July 31.Read more: Xiaomi buys Nokia patents
