The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) is tying up with Genesis Data Asia, supported by the Ministry of Education to launch an AI-based profiling platform known as TechStudy.my. The platform will profile and match students to in-demand tertiary level-digital tech courses and scholarships. The courses include creative multimedia, IT and computer science, which specialise in emerging tech areas such as AI, cybersecurity, and data science, among others.

According to the press statement, the platform will empower students to make better decisions about their tertiary education, and help school counsellors to play a more prominent role to promote tech tertiary courses and prepare students for their tertiary pathways that lead to high value digital tech careers.

This comes as MDEC is working closely with schools and selected universities to spread greater awareness about digital tech careers, and quality digital tech tertiary courses that can give students a head-start upon graduation. Meanwhile, Genesis Data Asia is a consortium comprised of four Malaysian companies - Orion Social Media, Fishermen Integrated, Uberfusion and Kasatria Technologies.

In a statement to A+M, Genesis Data Asia's managing director, Shanker Joyrama, said marketing for the platform will be done via press engagement. He added that the platform allows students to get a glimpse into their potential pathways. What used to take weeks now takes hours and this makes for better decision making, he explained.

"As much as the pilot is focused on digital-related talent force, our vision is that all courses be it digital or not are also a part of this platform making decision making for students, parents and even for counsellors to be able to advise students on his or her educational and life path," Joyrama said.

According to the press statement, the consortium is eager to drive this platform due to studies about the shortage of supply in the Malaysian labour market for individuals with digital tech skills. This might cause Malaysia to be less attractive in terms of foreign direct investment due to acute labour shortage. With this in mind, Genesis Data Asia aims to increase the awareness on options to pursue digital tech courses, reduce complexity when applying for such courses and drive consideration and intake for them.

A digital tech course fall into these four categories - data science and statistics, software development, creative multimedia, and engineering and computing. Currently, there are a total of 17 universities in the pilot programme and a total of 54 digital tech courses are supported on the platform. Among the list of universities and polytechnics include Taylor's University, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Sunway University and Politeknik Balik Pulau.

By entering their academic results into the platform, students will receive personalised recommendations to guide their applications to universities and scholarship providers. Students will also be guided on subjects they need to improve should they wish to target specific digital tech courses offered by premier digital tech institiutions such as universities and polytechnics that have proven track records in high graduate employability, industry engagement and career services.
