As of last week, Instagram announced that it would be deactivating “spammy accounts” from Instagram on an ongoing basis.“As part of this effort, we will be deleting these accounts forever, so they will no longer be included in follower counts. This means that some of you will see a change in your follower count,” said Kevin Systrom , CEO, Instagram in a blog post.“Most of you won’t see any impact. If you’re one of those who will see a correction, you will receive a notification in the app directing you to additional information,” said Systrom. It looks like users have begun to feel the effects of the clean up. Fake accounts, spam and people who repost others’ images or have inappropriate content (such as having no clothes on, said Instagram) will be removed.Celebrities who have fake followers are expected to see a major drop in follower count, said one social media marketer on Business Insider.“I lost 100 followers please help me to get them back”, said one user sophieecunninghaam.Another user coloured.pixels reported losing 3.1k users. Instagram has been working on the clean up since April.According to Business Insider, distraught users have been begging the company to stop eliminating accounts. But celebrities have been the hardest hit, with  Instagrammers such as Kendall and Kylie Jenner having lost hundreds of thousands of followers. Justin Bieber’s Instagram fan base has fallen by 3.5 million fans and Akon from 4.3 million to 1.9 million, reported the article.
