Singapore Sports Hub has appointed Lionel Yeo (pictured) as the new chief executive officer, effective 3 February 2020, taking over duties from chairman Bryn Jones. Jones was the acting CEO after former head Oon Jin Teik left the company in April this year.
As the new CEO, Yeo will be tasked to work together with the team and deliver annual programmes. These comprise recreational and competitive events, as well as community events, to serve children, youth, working adults, seniors and families in Singapore and the tourism sectors. Currently, the Singapore Sports Hub’s calendar of sports, entertainment and lifestyle events now has more than 210 events or more than 400 event days annually.
Yeo is also serving as an advisor at Grab and a board member at StarHub. He was previously the CEO of Singapore Tourism Board (STB) for over six years. Yeo first took on the role with STB in June 2012, and spearheaded the development of “Passion Made Possible”, a unified brand for Singapore launched in August 2017 together with the Economic Development Board and Ministry of Communications and Information.
His tenure also saw the initiative of projects such as Singapore: Inside Out, which showcased creative talent to refresh international perceptions of Singapore, and Design Orchard to profile Singapore’s design talent on Orchard Road. Yeo led STB’s robust events strategy, which supported more than 900 events in a period of five years. Yeo’s contributions also extend to working with industry leaders to drive productivity, innovation and skills initiatives in the hotel, travel agent, MICE and tourist guide industries. According to a media release, during this period, Singapore’s visitor arrivals hit record highs and grew by 30%.
CEO-designate Yeo said the Singapore Sports Hub is a major national project that he had been involved with during his time in government service. “I am aware of the challenges SportsHub faces and also of its achievements and tremendous potential. I am humbled to be given the opportunity to serve as its CEO, and look forward to engaging with all stakeholders to build on its success for Singapore,” he added.
Meanwhile, chairman Jones said the CEO has the all-important job to realise the SportsHub’s vision, goals and plans with the support of its partners and to work closely with them to deliver this vision and the company’s long-term strategic plan to be the region’s premier sport, entertainment and lifestyle destination.
