Erajaya partners Datapro to help Indonesia-Singapore tourists stay connected online

Indonesian telecommunications retailer Erajaya Swasembada has invested in Datapro Technologies, a startup in Singapore providing wi-fi hotspots for travellers, in the form of convertible bonds. The investment, according to reports by media outlets such as CNBC and and IDN Financials, is worth SG$600,000.

By helping tourists stay connected to the internet during a visit to Singapore, both companies aim to provide them greater convenience and a better travel experience. Citing statistics from Singapore Tourism Board (STB), the company said in a press release that the partnership has a strategic focus on the Indonesia market, which sees 3.02 million Indonesian tourists visiting Singapore in 2018. The number was the second highest after China, which amounted to 3.42 million people.

Datapro provides internet modems that can be rented for travel and taps on StarHub as its exclusive internet data network provider. It has also received support from the STB and has collaborated with Singapore Airlines to provide complimentary 2GB two-day wi-fi packages for passengers landing in Singapore. Datapro currently has kiosks stationed at Changi Airport and several hotels.

Erajaya intends to increase the penetration of Datapro products and services through the Erajaya Retail Group network for Indonesians travelling to Singapore. Erajaya Group CEO Hasan Aula added the company sees “good prospects” from the investment, as the high number of tourist visits to Singapore is directly proportional to the demand for internet connections during travel.

Meanwhile, Datapro director Allen Tan said: “We are very enthusiastic to provide the best Wi-Fi on the go service and experience for tourists travelling from Indonesia to Singapore. Because Indonesians are very communal, Datapro service will be very suitable because it can be a hotspot for up to five connection devices.”
