Danone, URC forms JV

France’s Danone, the brand behind Evian water, has teamed up with Universal Robina Corp (URC) to form a joint venture in the Philippines.The tie-up will be called Danone Universal Robina Beverages Inc, and will be 50-50 percent owned by URC and Danone Asia Holdings Private Ltd. The venture is scheduled to open shop next year."Through the joint venture, URC aims to diversify its line of beverage products, increase the sales of its various beverage products and expand its market share in the Philippines," URC said in a disclosure.Danone URC comes four months after Calbee Inc, Japan's largest snack food company, entered a similar partnership with the local snack brand to form Calbee-URC Inc. The venture will has an initial capital of P600 million and was scheduled to start last April.Groupe Danone produces dairy products, cereals and baby foodsbut it is best known for bottled water. Aside from Evian, it also owns Aqua, Volvic and Badoit while it owns Yili, Aqua (Indonesia), Sehat (Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore) and Robust in Asia and Bonafont in Mexico.
