Celestial deal sees classic Kung Fu titles air to US audiences

El Rey Network, a pay-TV network launched by maverick filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, has struck a deal with Celestial Pictures to broadcast its library of iconic martial arts titles.The five-year deal begins 1 October 1 and expands on an existing program licensing agreement.The new deal will provide the network with access to 255 iconic martial arts titles from the Shaw Brothers vault – the world's leading martial arts collection, many on an exclusive basis.Both parties are also in discussion on new original programming concepts based on the Shaw Brothers’ films.New titles available to El Rey through the deal include The Five Deadly Venoms, Mad Monkey Kung Fu, The Brave Archer Trilogy and Have Sword Will Travel, which will air throughout the schedule as well as during the network's monthly Kung Fu marathons.Rodriguez, El Rey Network's founder and chairman, said iconic films resonate with its viewer base in the United States."As a kid, I found this kind of content wildly entertaining and these dazzling, kinetic and epic spectacles are still a great inspiration in the work I do to this day."Kristen Tong, chief operating officer at Celestial Pictures, added El Rey had already proven to be a great platform to showcase classic titles to a new audience.The El Rey deal comes shortly after Celestial struck a content deal with two global combat sports promotions for its channel, KIX.The deals are with IMG Media for World Series of Fighting, the fastest-growing mixed martial arts promotion in the world and Total Sports Asia for Glory World Series.KIX also airs Korean MMA organisation ROAD FC, along with US mixed martial arts group Bellator.
