The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has announced that executive director Anthony Lau will leave his position at the conclusion of his contract period later this year. The board made the announcement on 3 May, stating that Lau (pictured left) – who assumed office in 2007 – would leave after his contract expires on 31 July 2019. It added that a global search will begin shortly for his replacement.South China Morning Post (SCMP) said Lau decided not to renew his contract as he wanted to spend more time with his family. Employees were reportedly shocked to learn this news.It is also reported that HKTB chairman Pang Yiu-kai and representatives of the government had equally pleaded with Lau to remain in his position to no avail.Lau’s decision to step down is another notable high-level departure at the HKTB in only four months. Pang himself succeeded Peter Lam in April as chairman, following an announcement in March that Lam would leave his position at the helm of the board.Tourism is still colossal in importance to the region. In 2018, Hong Kong attracted a record 65.1 million visitors, with almost 80% hailing from China. Tourism sector lawmaker Yiu Si-wing was quoted in SCMP‘s report as saying that Lau was “good at executing the government and the board’s policies.”Yiu also hoped that Lau’s replacement could help boost the number of overseas visitors and that he or she should have knowledge about tourism, as well as having both a mainland and international outlook.
