Yahoo phases out seven digital magazines

Yahoo is phasing out seven of its digital magazines. The magazines affected will be Yahoo Food, Yahoo Health, Yahoo Parenting, Yahoo Makers, Yahoo Travel, Yahoo Autos and Yahoo Real Estate. The announcement was made by Martha Nelson, global editor-in-chief who was hired from Time Inc.’s late last year. Nelson explained on a blog post the move is in line with Yahoo’s plans to simplify its business model and focus efforts around its four most successful content areas – news, sports, finance and lifestyle.“As we make these changes, we acknowledge the talent and dedication of an extraordinary group of journalists who brought new and newsworthy content to Yahoo. While these Digital Magazines will no longer be published, you will continue to find the topics they covered, as well as style, celebrity, entertainment, politics, tech and much more across our network,” she said.Earlier this month, Yahoo announced its plans to cut 15% of its workforce as it looked to reduce operating expenses by more than US$400 million by the end of 2016. To that end, Yahoo also announced that it would exit five offices in Dubai, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Madrid, and Milan. It’s expected that most of these changes will take place in Q1, but by the end of 2016, the company anticipates having approximately 9,000 employees and fewer than 1,000 contractors. This represents a workforce that is roughly 42%.This was announced by Marissa Mayer (pictured), CEO of Yahoo as she outlined the company’s plans of improving its consumer and advertiser product quality and grow daily active users (DAUs). Mayer said the strategic plan is to help accelerate Yahoo’s transformation and this calls “for bold shifts in products and in resources.”
