TVB will partner with China Media Capital (CMC) and Warner Brothers Entertainment to develop and produce a slate of Chinese-language films, including global tent poles for distribution in China and internationally.Announced over the weekend, a new joint venture company, Flagship Entertainment Group, will be formed to capitalise on China’s rapidly growing film market and increasing demand for high-quality domestic movies.Charles Chan, chairman of TVB, said the joint venture will help the media giant look for new, creative ideas and bring content to the next level."The partnership with CMC and Warner Bros. will open a lot of doors in the mainland and overseas film markets,” Chan said. The announcement comes at an pivotal moment for TV in Hong Kong, with recent moves from Netflix and LeTV signalling a shake-up of Hong Kong’s broadcast market.Netflix, which streams films and TV shows to homes and mobile devices, earlier this month announced it was including Hong Kong as part of its global expansion.Chan added that Hong Kong holds a unique position in bridging the Chinese mainland audiences with Hollywood studios and said TVB has a unique advantage because of its popular artistes and wide range of promotion platforms.“As I said when launching the Shaw Brothers Pictures Limited earlier this year, I hope to join hands with local film companies to produce more popular and quality films. Hong Kong has created many classic titles before. Together with Hong Kong filmmakers, talents and professionals, we have the confidence to make new ones,” he said.
