Malaysia – Marketers working directly with online news sites will be able to take advantage of the close to 15 million Malaysian-based Internet users with the launch of Google News Malaysia.

Rahul Roy-Chowdhury, Product Manager, Google says: “Google itself does not directly benefit from Google News because we do not show ads on its pages.”

“In so far as marketers work directly with online news sites to monetize their content, then marketers can take advantage of the additional traffic that Google News brings,” he adds.

Google News made its entrance to Malaysian shores recently claiming to be unique from other online news aggregators as its results are compiled by computer algorithms, and without human intervention.

“All the ranking is done automatically and unbiasedly. Google does not have an editorial team that filters news topics. Google strives to be as inclusive as possible, without regard to political viewpoint or ideology, while also providing a high quality experience for our users,” Chowdhury adds.

On why Google chose Malaysia, he said the statistics for Internet users makes the country a very important market.

“Releasing a Malaysian edition of Google News is in line with our mission to make the world’s information accessible and useful to as many people as possible. The local edition of Google News features stories from a wide variety of local news sources. We hope Malaysians will find Google News relevant and useful in accessing a variety of perspectives on the latest headlines,” he said.

Since its launch in 2002, Chowdhury says Google News’ goal has always been to offer as many editions as possible to reach worldwide users and the product team had strove to put up the Malaysian edition.
