New data from The Nielsen Company shows the the figure represents approximately 70% of the world's population.
The previous games in Athens, achieved a total of 3.9 billion, with the Sydney Games attracting 3.6 billion viewers.
Over the 17 days of the Olympic Games, Nielsen revealed total spending by 28 Olympic sponsors hit RMB 11.8 billion, representing a 12% year-on-year increase and accounting for 5% of China's entire market spend.
