DHL sets targets on turning green

Global - DHL has put another green foot forward, becoming the first company in the express and logistics sector to announce a detailed blueprint in reducing its carbon footprint by 30% in 2020.

The logistics company announced it will be setting strict green targets across their four imperative functions - air, road, real estate and products and services. DHL said its recently launched GoGreen programme aims to reduce emissions per package sent, tonne transported and square metre of real estate used by 10% in 2012, and by 30% in 2020 as compared to 2007 levels.

"We have the size and scale to take up the leadership role and develop more efficient global supply chains," said Frank Appel, CEO of Deutsche Post World Net. "Asia is a key region of growth and as the economies and societies undergo growth and continued urbanisation, we are looking at ways we can help ensure that our business takes a leadership role in ensuring sustainability for the communities we operate in."

Monika Wulf-Mathies, head of public policy & sustainability at Deutsche Post World Net, said that the company is looking for innovative ways to ensure energy efficiency by reducing resources and carbon footprint while also meeting the increasing demands of customers who are looking for a green-friendly shipping options.

In line with this effort, DHL's GoGreen programme has a wide range of environmentally sustainable initiatives to monitor the company's green progress. Some of DHL's programmes include replacing and modemising 90% of the company's air fleet to more fuel-efficient aircraft, utilizing alternative fuel vehicles and raising environmental awareness among its staff.
