Singapore - In conjunction with the World Environment Day, DHL is encouraging its employees to be more socially responsible by switching off the office lights for an hour.

The "Lights Off" campaign is an effort by DHL to raise awareness and encourage staff to be responsible in conserving energy. It is one of many initiatives to facilitate a long-term cultural change to be more environmentally-friendly.

Switching off the lights for an hour across DHL’s global offices in 220 countries with over 124,000 employees would lead to an estimated reduction of 5.2 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, a similar amount produced in an hour by roughly 250 diesel vans operating under normal conditions.

DHL has also other ways of encouraging employees to reduce their environmental impact, one of which includes a driver awareness programme. The aim of the programme is to help drivers understand the significant impact their driving behaviour can have on DHL's fuel efficiency.

"As one of the world's leading express and logistics company, we recognise the impact our people and operations can have on our environmental footprint," says Dan McHugh, CEO of DHL Express Asia Pacific. "The ‘Lights Off' initiative will help raise awareness across the entire DHL workforce and encourage employees to minimise their carbon footprint at work and at home."

The company aims to improve its carbon efficiency by 30% from its 2007 emission levels by 2020.
