Singapore - Fulford PR has won the Volvo Ocean Race PR account as this year, through a partnership with One15 Singapore Ocean Race, Singapore makes its debut in the fourth leg of the round-the-world yacht race.

Fulford will provide publicity and communications support to promote the race in Singapore as well as handling crisis communications. In the 2005 - 2006 series, one crew member of the ABN Amro Two team died when he was swept overboard as the team fought 5 metre seas and 30 knot winds . It was the first death in the race since 1989 and the fifth in its 32-year history.

"We felt that Fulford PR's proposed strategies fitted very well with the objectives of the Volvo Ocean Race, namely to create excitement and anticipation among Singaporeans and to draw overseas visitors from around the world. The agency has demonstrated sound and in-depth knowledge of the local and regional sporting arena and we are happy to have them onboard with us," Rob Turnbull, COO for ONE15 Singapore Ocean Race, said.

As the world's most challenging yacht races, the 2008 - 2009 Volvo Ocean Race features seven yachts from five syndicates competing against each other in a round-the-world contest over 11 ports in 10 countries. The race begins in Spain, on 11 October, and participants are expected to sail into Singapore waters from Kochi, India, around the final week of December.

Once in Singapore, the participating yachts will be based at One15 Marina on Sentosa Island where they will take part in a range of close-to-shore activities including an in-port race and a Pro-Am race.
