William Moss

What's it about?

Imagethief is produced by William Moss, a public relations professional and writer working in China since 2004. His more recent post, The trouble with stage-managed media tours, details a government-managed visit by foreign reporters to Tibet's capital which backfired when Buddhist monks disrupted the tour, screaming that there was no religious freedom and that the Dalai Lama was not to blame for Lhasa's recent violence.

Gang Lu

What's it about?

Mobinode, written in both English and Chinese, covers Chinese start-ups and China companies. Written by Gang Lu, founder and chief editor Mobinode, the site won the 2007 Best Tech Blog award at the China Blog Awards. Lu's recent post, Baidu Hi, The Compliments, Ambition, Disappointment and Expectation, details Baidu's new Chinese Instant Messenger service Baidu Hi. "The release of Baidu Hi is reported as an ambitious step into Chinese IM market to directly compete with the giant QQ. Baidu refused to comment on this. Baidu has launched a number of services including Baidu Space, Video, Map, Music box etc, how to package them into one Baidu service is not an easy job.

David Feng

What's it about?

Like Mobinode, Techblog86 covers the Chinese start-up and local Chinese companies operating in the online and digital space. Run by David Feng, a media specialist living in Beijing, the site has been likened to a Chinese equivalent of TechCrunch. Some of his recent posts include comparing technologies in China to Western countries and their impact on China. His most recent post covers, in great detail, MSN's decision to censor messages with links to major Chinese portals, such as Sohu and QQ.

"The bug occurred just around 14:00. Content with the string www.sohu.com or www.qq.com, as well as content with just the word "sohu" were being blocked," Feng said.

Paul Denlinger

What's it about?

The China Vortex is authored by Paul Denlinger, who has worked in marketing, advertising and the online space in greater China for nearly 20 years.

Denlinger, having worked with the likes of Ogilvy & Mather, Sina.com, chinadotcom and Shanda Interactive Entertainment, he provides good insight into the China market, particularly from the digital and creative fields. A recent post, China Marketing: Think Deep, Not Big, and Add A Twist, is typical of his many articles. "The trouble with many Chinese startups is that the founder is so focused on raising money that he forgets to even spin a good story about what he's going to do with the money! And yet, China is such a hot place to be now that there are people with money who are willing to part with significant amounts of money without even asking for a good story about how they are going to execute!"
