Singapore – Asian expatriates prefer to live in Singapore compared to Hong Kong and Tokyo.

Asian expatriates rank Singapore as the most favourable Asian city to live in according to the Location Ranking Survey by ECA International, with Kobe and Yokohama tailing in second and third place.

Lee Quane, general manager of ECA International in Hong Kong credits this to Singapore’s cosmopolitan population, high quality infrastructure and health facilities, low health risks, air pollution and crime rates. “Although we did see a small deterioration in some factors, such as air quality and accommodation, in 2007, it still retains its status as being the location with the best quality of living for assignees in this region.”

At 11th place, the top Chinese city to live in is Shanghai while Xi’an is China’s least favourable location in the survey at 35th place. Indian cities fall out of the top 20 with the highest, Chennai, at 26th position, followed by Bangalore and Mumbai in 29th and 30th place respectively.

On a global scale, the survey shows that Asians rank Sydney, Melbourne, Copenhagen, Canberra, Vancouver, Wellington and Dublin among 10 destinations for Asians to live in.

Climate, air quality, health services, housing and utilities, isolation, social network and leisure facilities, infrastructure, personal safety and political tensions are factors that were taken into consideration for the Location Ranking Survey.
