Online medium looks set to trump TV

Hong Kong - Online has already surpassed newspapers, pay TV and weekly magazines as preferred media among Generation Y, now it looks like traditional TV is next on the hit list.

The study reveals that the Generation Y likes communicating with their friends online apart from surfing the internet, with nearly 70% logged on to MSN, 27% of them blog and 21% uses ICQ in the past year.

Helen Pemberton, director for Nielsen Media Research for The Nielsen Company, Hong Kong observed that the internet is catching up fast with other traditional media in engaging consumers, especially the Y-generation as results show that internet recency far exceeds the average 53% of the Hong Kong population.

Compared to the average Hong Konger, the top three entertainment for youths include shopping, going to a karaoke club and visiting the cinema.

66% of youths also own an MP3 gadget with 13% owning an iPod.
