Singapore - Viscion Media will launch a weekly Saturday sports newspaper, 6YardBox, predominantly focused on football - the first issue hits outlets and newsstands before noon on 18 August.

The weekly broadsheet is priced at $1 which according to Viscion Media, GM, Holman Chin, is a "very well rounded number that attributes the appropriate value proposition to the paper".

"Our competitors would obviously be all publications that cover football which in some instances also includes internet publications. The print publications tend to focus too much on post game coverage and flat one-dimensional profiles that you can find in real time on the internet. We believe that strong analysis and commentary such as what we will provide is the key to building a strong connection with sports fans," he said.

Editorial-wise, the publication will cover major football leagues around the world, with an emphasis on the English Premiership, Champions League, Spanish league, and the Italian League.

"Just visit any sports bars or coffee shops around the island on matchday. Football in Singapore is alive and enjoyed by passionate fans young and old, just like my hometown Manchester. We believe these fans want more from print than the usual post-game coverage and pre-match hype. What fans need is a fresh insight into the beautiful game, which is what 6YardBox provides," Scott Birch, managing editor for 6YardBox said.

Among other things, Viscion Media are publishers of Lexean magazine, a publication which recently caused controversy when its inaugural issue was given a ‘special' audit by the ABC Singapore. Marketing reported on the news in our August issue's Audit Watch column.

When asked about audit intentions for 6YardBox, Chin said "we strongly encourage transparency in the publishing industry and will audit 6YardBox in about a year's time".

In other news, Viscion Media plans to launch a weekly women's paper at the end of the year, titled Echo Tribune. Chin would not elaborate further on details.
